Elie Siegmeister- Around New York

Part of the festivities of the 1939 World's Fair in New York City included a
concert series of new music by American Composers. Around New York, written
for Cecil Leeson and sponsored by the 1936 Works Progress Administration
project for American musicians, was premiered at one of these concerts. These
two brief works, subtitled Two Whimsical Pieces for Alto Saxophone and Piano
capture part of the lighter side of life in New York City in the late 1930s.
Floor-Walker's Day Off refers to the department store employees of a past era
who walked the sales floor day after day assisting customers. Spring Fever on
a Ferry Boat rekindles the anticipation of summer on one of New York's most
beloved - and now mostly forgotten - modes of transportation.

Elie Siegmeister had been a significant force in American music since the
1930s. He wrote for all mediums, including opera, band, orchestra, theater and
film, and composed many solo and chamber works. Among his awards and
commissions are those from the Ford Foundation, NEA, Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra, American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and the Library
of Congress. He was instrumental in founding the American Composers Alliance
in 1937, and over the years served as vice-president of the American Music
Center and as a member of the board of directors of ASCAP. After studying
with Wallingford Riegger in New York and Nadia Boulanger in France,
Siegmeister began a multi-faceted teaching career which included posts at
Brooklyn College, The New School for Social Research, University of Minnesota,
and Hofstra University.
