Everett Gates- Incantation and Ritual

Everett Gates (b. 1914) is professor emeritus at the Eastman School of Music, where he taught theory and composition for many years. His works are noted for their rhythmic vitality and distinctive American harmonies and melodies. His two well-known works for saxophone, Declamation and Dance for SATB quartet and Incantation and Ritual for solo soprano saxophone were written for Sigurd and Karina Rascher while they were affiliated with Eastman. Gates wrote Incantation and Ritual in 1963 for Karina Rascher, who has become one of the world's foremost soprano saxophonists and member of the Rascher Saxophone Quartet. Incantation and Ritual is cast as a theme and variations, based on tonalities and scales that are associated with the music of Scriabin.
